Introductie
Voor deze editie van het borst­reconstructiekamp is een kleinere groep een week eerder afgereisd naar Oeganda. Op dit moment wordt bij het grootste deel van de patiënten met borstkanker nog een borstamputatie (mastectomie) uitgevoerd. Daarbij leeft vaak de angst dat borstsparende behandelingen minder radicaal of minder veilig zouden zijn. Dit in tegenstelling tot Nederland, waar borstsparende operaties en – indien nodig – borst­reconstructies veel vaker worden toegepast. Hierdoor kunnen vrouwen hun eigen borst behouden, waardoor het lichaam minder ingrijpend verandert.

Dr. Irene en Dr. Joel, bekend van eerdere kampen in het Kiruddu-ziekenhuis waar zij hun opleiding hebben gevolgd, hebben ons gevraagd hen meer te leren over de verschillende reconstructietechnieken. Joel en Irene zijn twee jonge plastisch chirurgen die samen de afdeling plastische chirurgie in het Mulago-ziekenhuis runnen, een van de grootste nationale verwijs- en opleidingsziekenhuizen van Oeganda. Het ziekenhuis speelt een belangrijke rol in de opleiding van zorgprofessionals.

"We hebben 13 uur met de bus gereisd om hier te komen. Ik ben zo dankbaar dat jullie het leven van mijn zoon hebben veranderd."

Dit waren de woorden van Gabriels vader kort nadat zijn zoon een schisis-operatie had ondergaan in het Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. Voor dit gezin vergde het bereiken van het ziekenhuis een zware reis door heel Uganda. Voor Gabriel betekende het de kans op een betere toekomst.

Van 11 tot 25 april 2026 bezocht een team van Interplast Holland Uganda om patiëntenzorg te verlenen, lokale samenwerkingsverbanden te versterken en mogelijkheden te verkennen voor langdurige samenwerking op het gebied van schisis-, craniofaciale en reconstructieve chirurgie.

"We travelled 13 hours by bus to get here. I am so grateful that you have changed my son’s life."

These were the words of Gabriel’s father shortly after his son underwent cleft lip surgery at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. For this family, reaching the hospital required an arduous journey across Uganda. For Gabriel, it meant the opportunity for a brighter future.

From 11 to 25 April 2026, a team from Interplast Holland visited Uganda to provide patient care, strengthen local partnerships and explore opportunities for long-term collaboration in cleft, craniofacial and reconstructive surgery.

Introduction

This surgical camp started differently from previous years. In 2025 the planned surgical camp did not take place. Mnazi Mmoja Hospital was – and still is –undergoing major renovations, and the temporary alternative setting presented significant challenges for safe surgical and peri-operative care. In consultation with our local colleagues, it was decided not to proceed at that time.

In 2026 we were able to resume collaboration. As Mnazi Mmoja remains under renovation, this surgical camp took place at Kivunge Hospital. We knew beforehand that this would likely mean fewer patients and more logistical unpredictability.

Interplast Holland has been coming to Zanzibar since 2009, and over the years Mnazi Mmoja had become a familiar environment, with known colleagues and established routines. Working at a different location inevitably meant starting again in some respects. We were curious to see how this new setting would work in practice.

Unfortunately,  just a few days before our scheduled departure, Tallechien Tempelman, plastic surgeon from Groningen, sent us a message that she was not able to join our team this year due to personal circumstances. We hope she will be joining us again during our next trip to Zanzibar. Anyway, in our thoughts she was with us all the time and we kept in contact through WhatsApp...

The rest of the team already knew each well other from earlier missions. We met at Schiphol Airport on Sunday morning around eight. Liam and Elmarie joined us behind the customs. After an uneventful flight, we arrived at Kisauni International Airport in Zanzibar at 23:00 hours. Going through customs was quite a challenge, but again we managed to do so as the last passengers of the flight. Dr Rukia welcomed us very heartily at the airport and we were brought to our hotel for a good night's sleep.

There is a long-standing relationship with Dr Titus Opegu and his wife Maria who run the MIDAS Touch Medical Services. A centre where patients and families are cared for in the pre-and postoperative trajectory. Almost all the care Titus and Maria give these poor patients is for free. Kumi Hospital has a reach of approximately 4 million people. Kumi Hospital is a member of the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB); it is therefore a private non-profit (PNFP) institution.
Kumi Hospital has transformed from a centre for the disabled to a general hospital with 300 beds.

verslag Burundi dec 2022 Interplast Holland

Helma Hofland, werkzaam als verpleegkundig onderzoeker en verpleegkundige op het brandwondencentrum in het Maasstad Ziekenhuis, heeft veel ervaring met brandwondenzorg in Afrika. Dat het daar net even anders gaat dan in de westerse landen leest u in haar verslag. Deze is in het Nederlands en in het Engels om zo ook de collega's in o.a. Afrika te kunnen informeren.

In juni 2022 werd voor de eerste keer de cursus 'Basics of Burn Care' gegeven in Uganda. Dat het een groot succes was kunt u lezen in het prachtige verslag van Shoista Kambiz die bijna klaar is met haar opleiding tot plastisch chirurg. Dat u kunt lezen dat onze oud voorzitter en oprichter Rein Zeeman alom nog aanwezig is in spirit zal geen verrassing zijn.
